The short answer

A set of porcelain veneers for a La Jolla patient is designed one tooth at a time at our office, 133.1 miles away by car. Dr. Faraz Farahnik checks gum health and bite before anything else, explains the lasting trade-offs, and only then proposes shade, shape and the number of teeth involved.

What should you ask before committing to porcelain veneers in La Jolla?

Ask what each veneer is for, what the tooth underneath looks like now, and what the alternatives would achieve. Good answers to those three questions tell you more than any brochure.

A useful consultation feels like an interview that runs both ways. You might ask why a particular tooth is in the plan and its neighbor isn't, how the design will be previewed, and who to call if something feels off after bonding. Dr. Farahnik expects those questions and would rather hear them early. It also helps to say what you're nervous about, whether that's the look, the numbing, or how a lasting change fits your life. Patients from La Jolla sometimes jot a list on the drive over; that list is welcome in the chair.

What about one dark or discolored tooth?

A single dark tooth, often after an old injury or a root canal, is a common reason people ask about veneers. Whether a veneer, a crown or internal whitening suits it depends on why it darkened and how much of the tooth is left.

Masking a dark tooth is harder than it looks, because the ceramic has to block the color underneath while still matching the bright, translucent teeth beside it. That can affect the material choice and the amount of preparation. Dr. Farahnik will check the tooth's health first, including whether it needs any treatment, and then explain each option and its trade-offs for that one tooth.

How are the final veneers placed?

They're checked on your teeth first for fit, shade and shape, then each tooth is cleaned and conditioned and the veneers are bonded with resin cement and set with a curing light.

Seeing the finals before they're bonded matters, because once bonded they're there to stay. After bonding, excess cement is removed, edges are smoothed, and your bite is checked as you close, slide forward and move side to side. It's normal for the new surfaces to feel slightly unfamiliar to your tongue for a few days. A follow-up lets Dr. Farahnik check your gums and adjust anything that feels high.

How much time off might you need when coming from La Jolla?

Plan on taking the day for the longer visits, preparation and bonding, once you count the drive both ways. Consultations and check-ups take less.

The exact amount depends on your plan and the time of day you choose. Some people from farther away book the first slot of the morning so they're back in La Jolla by afternoon. Others prefer a later start to avoid the busiest roads. Either way, avoid booking a demanding commitment immediately after, because numbness and a long drive make for a tiring combination.

Porcelain Veneers

Do you have to change what you eat or drink?

Not much. Porcelain resists staining well, so coffee, tea and red wine are fine, though your natural teeth and the bonding edges can still pick up stain.

Rinsing with water after dark drinks helps the teeth around your veneers. The bigger adjustment is texture, not color: bite into very hard foods with your back teeth or cut them first. Sticky candy isn't a danger to finished veneers the way it is to temporaries, but hard candy, ice and nuts in the shell deserve care. Think "sensible," not "restricted."

How do gums affect veneers over the years?

Healthy gums hide veneer edges and frame the teeth. If gums recede with age or inflammation, the edge of a veneer can eventually show.

Recession isn't something veneers cause on their own, but it does change how they look. Gentle brushing, daily cleaning between teeth and regular professional cleanings protect them most. Dr. Farahnik checks your gums before treatment, because veneers placed against inflamed tissue start at a disadvantage, and keeps an eye on them at checkups afterward. If a margin does become visible years later, the veneer can be replaced with its edge placed for your gums as they are then.

Questions

FAQ: the veneer questions La Jolla patients raise

These cover the practical and treatment questions people ask before booking. More on porcelain veneers

Can veneers fix crooked teeth?

Veneers can make mildly uneven teeth look straighter. Significant crowding or teeth that sit far out of line usually respond better to aligners, sometimes followed by veneers or bonding to refine shape.

Can porcelain veneers be removed later?

A veneer can be removed and replaced, but the tooth underneath usually can't go back to how it was, because enamel was shaped to make room. Plan on that tooth needing a veneer or another restoration from then on.

Do porcelain veneers stain?

Porcelain itself resists staining well. The bonding edges and your natural teeth can still pick up color from coffee, tea, wine or tobacco, so rinsing after dark drinks and keeping up cleanings helps everything stay matched.

Can I get veneers if my gums have receded?

Sometimes, once the gums are healthy and stable. Recession can leave a darker root surface or uneven gum heights showing, so Dr. Farahnik checks whether gum treatment should come first and plans the veneer edges around where your gums actually sit.

How long does the whole veneer process take for someone in La Jolla?

It depends on your plan, including any groundwork, lab time and how your schedule lines up with ours. You'll get a realistic timeline with your written plan, and from La Jolla each visit is about 162 minutes away in light traffic.
